Biography

Raised on a dairy farm outside of Thunder Bay, Susan Dykstra has had a passion for photography and a love for the beauty of nature around her since her childhood. Through the years, she has become a master nature photographer, learning the technical side, by reading and absorbing many publications on her craft from world class nature photographers like John Shaw, Boyd Norton and Tim Fitzharris. Becoming her life’s passion, Susan strives to make people stop and become aware of the beauty in the landscape that surrounds them where ever they live. When she started selling her work over twenty years ago, her dream of having her own studio, where she could expand her horizons was built and opened, just outside her back door.

Specializing in fine art and nature photography, she has won several photo contests, including the International Photo Contests. She donations of her work and time to many local organizations for fundraisers, has been appreciated by many. Many local people will recognize her cover photograph work that has graced every publication of Thunder Bay’s own “BayView” magazine since 2009. Her images have also appeared in publications of “Natures Best” magazine and “Lake Superior” magazine. Susan’s newest achievement is being awarded “Photographic Artist of the Year, 2015” and “Tibor Horvath Award of Excellence 2015” by the Professional Photographers of Ontario.

Dykstra’s favourite time of year to photograph, is the crisp cold. mid winter when temperatures plunge, revealing the magic of ice, wind and snow, the way they enhance the trees, the grasses and the shorelines or when night time northern lights and star trails dance across her lens and into her work. When she is working in the warmth of her studio, creating and framing her art, she welcomes anyone who would like to view her work. Her gallery is open on Saturdays and Mondays, or by appointment only by phoning 807 628 2772. You can find her gallery at 581 Boundary Dr. west off Highway #61.(807.628.2772). (Open by appointment ONLY through the winter season…..after Christmas to May long weekend).
